Description: There is a rapidly growing body of empirical studies in the behavioural, cognitive, and brain sciences that show how our judgments and behaviour are unconsciously influenced by emotional and situational factors. As a result, interest in questions of moral psychology and experimental ethics has increased. How should moral philosophy make use of research results in these relatively new areas of expertise? Do the findings threaten traditional notions as free will, character, and moral agency? Can we use the findings to improve our normative theories? Is there a danger in letting them inform ethical theory and practice? The course aims to offer an overview of contemporary debates in moral psychology and experimental ethics and the different philosophical reactions to it.
