Dear Members of Eurec,

the DRZE Bonn welcomes you to the first issue of the eurec-newsletter.
Before eurec will be entering a new stage by inviting other representatives of European RECs to become eurec-members in the current year, eurec takes the opportunity to establish this platform to distribute information about recent developments and upcoming events concerning research ethics in general and research ethics committees in particular. The present newsletter provides information about important international publications on research ethics published within the last two years, conferences and meetings with regard to research ethics taking place in 2008.

The Social and Human Sciences Sector presents a new publication on bioethics – the book “Ethical Review of Biomedical Research in the CIS Countries (Social and Cultural Aspects)”.

EMEA (European Medicines Agency)

Conference: Operation of the Clinical Trials Directive (Directive 2001/20/EC) and Perspectives for the Future - A joint conference of the European Commission and the European Medicines Agency.
3rd of October 2007, London

The conference provided an overview of the experience to date with the operation of Directives 2001/20/EC and 2005/28/EC and their implementing texts, and to describe problems encountered and offer recommendations for the future.

EUREC is a network of national networks and associations of Research Ethics Committees (RECs) in Europe. The network aims at the development of high quality standards in clinical trials in order to protect human subjects. The members of EUREC commit themselves to create this network in order to facilitate exchanges of knowledge, know-how and information, disseminate training materials among members of RECs, and conduct research on characteristics of biomedical research conducted on human beings. EUREC was launched in January 2005 with the commencement of the EUREC Declaration.
